60th Anniversary Celebration

On the 16th February 1999, The Rotary Club of Brierley Hill celebrated the 60th Anniversary of being granted it’s charter with a special dinner in the Caslon Suite of the Copthorne Hotel, Merry Hill. 182 rotarians and guests were present including the Mayor of Dudley Councillor Ken Finch and the Mayoress Mrs Mary Finch, President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland Neill Hill and his wife Maureen, Governor of District 1060 John Wallis and his wife Ann, the Archdeacon of Dudley the Venerable John Gathercole and his wife Claire and the after dinner speaker TV Antiques Roadshow personality Henry Sandon.

Club President Richard Moore made the opening speech and also presented cheques to RIBI President Neill Hill for the Nepal Trust; District Governor John Wallis for Foundation (Rotary’s own Charity) and the Mayor Councillor Ken Finch for his 1998/9 appeal.

RIBI President Neill Hill proposed the toast to the Club and the response was given by Past President David Stephenson. The toast to Visitors and Guests was proposed by First Vice President Abdul Hafiz and the response was made by the President of the Rotary Club of Dudley Brian Archer.

Henry Sandon spoke of his ‘Roadshow’ experiences and of his famous finds, including the slipware owl affectionately known as ‘Olly’ which is now in Stoke on Trent Museum. Olly fetched £20,000 at auction and his owner used the money to adopt five Rumanian orphans.
